Alexei Kuzmichev: Sanctioned Russian tycoon detained in France
A Russian billionaire has been detained in France suspected of violating EU sanctions and tax fraud.
In one of the first actions of its kind in France since the Ukraine war began, Alexei Kuzmichev was detained in Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera.
Police raided properties in both Saint-Tropez and Paris which are linked to the tycoon, an ally of President Vladimir Putin.
Lawyers for Mr Kuzmichev were not immediately available for comment.
A co-founder of Russian finance consortium Alfa Group, he was detained on Monday in connection with alleged money laundering, tax evasion and violating international sanctions, French financial prosecutors confirmed to Reuters news agency.
By Tuesday morning no charges had been brought but he was still in custody, they said.

Alexei Viktorovich Kuzmichev, also known as Kousmichoff, is a Russian billionaire businessman.
He was born in 1962 in Kirov, Russia.
In 1980-1982, Kuzmichev served in the army on the Soviet-Chinese border as a radio operator and was a member of the Communist party during this time.
Kuzmichev attended the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, where he met his future business partners, Mikhail Fridman and German Khan.
In 1988, Kuzmichev, Fridman, Khan, and Mikhail Alfimov founded Alfa Photo, specializing in photo chemical imports, which later diversified into export business, leading to the formation of Alfa Group Consortium.
He is married to Svetlana Kuzmicheva-Uspenskaya and owns a $42 million mansion in New York City.

The business tycoon, considered one of the 'most influential people in Russia' and an associate of Vladimir Putin, was arrested in Saint-Tropez on Monday.
Russian billionaire Alexei Kuzmichev, an associate of Vladimir Putin targeted by EU sanctions, was charged with tax fraud in France on Wednesday, November 1, the country's financial prosecutor said. Kuzmichev was "placed under judicial supervision" and banned from leaving the country, according to the French National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF). He also faces charges of concealing work with an organized crime group and on a presumption of money laundering, the PNF said. Kuzmichev was obliged to pay a bond of €8 million ($8.5 million). His lawyer refused to comment.
