Across the nation, transgender athletes, such as champion swimmer Lia Thomas (pictured) are facing an onslaught of hostile protests and even more hostile legislation. Several states have banned trans women and girls from participating on teams that match their gender identity in middle and high school, and dozens of similar bills are under consideration.
Despite all that, trans athletes have continued to shine. They're breaking college records and winning Olympic medals, all while publicly advocating for their rights — and the rights of trans athletes everywhere — before school boards and lawmakers.

He said at the time,"I feel as if I am a man and have to live my life in the body of a woman. I am aware of the fact that transsexuality is a fringe issue, and I do not want to be responsible for it remaining on the fringe."
Well, two years later he is now the very handsome Balian Buschbaum, and in a diary entry on his website stated, "Courage is the road to freedom. I woke up in complete freedom today. The sky is wide open."
Balian chose his new name in January 2008, after the blacksmith in the movie Kingdom of Heaven.
Since taking his first testosterone shot on Christmas Day 2007, Balian has documented the metamorphosis from Yvonne to the handsome guy he is now. He's appeared on a few talk shows and has received support from his former colleagues in the athletics (

Life and career
[edit]Buschbaum competed in women's pole gymnastik på hästryggen before his gender transition, winning the title of German ungdom Champion multiple times. In 1999 Buschbaum became the German pole vault mästare, later that year setting the German record for pole vault with a height of 4.42 m, beating his previous junior world record of 4.37 m. His personal best is 4.70 metres, achieved in June 2003 in Ulm. On 21 November 2007 Buschbaum announced his retirement from the idrott due to a persistent injury and the desire to begin gender reassignment.[1] In January 2008, Buschbaum announced that his new first name was "Balian",
