Ben Scheres
Dutch developmental biologist
Bernardus Johannes Godefridus Scheres (Ben) Scheres (born 10 July 1960 in Echt) is a Dutch developmental biologist. He is Professor of Plant Developmental Biology at Wageningen University.[1]
Scheres studied phytopathology at Wageningen University, where he received his doctorate in 1990. After a post-doctoral period at the Laboratory of Genetics in Ghent, he became a lecturer at the University of Utrecht, where he became Professor of Plant Developmental Biology in 1999 and Professor of Molecular Genetics in 2005.
Scheres studies the developmental biology of plants and compares them to that of animals, discovering many similarities. He used the thale cress as a test plant. Among other things, he discovered the role of stem cells in the growth and shape development of roots. He specifically switched off individual cells with a laser and blocked individual genes in order to explore their role in development.[2]

On Wednesday, we reported on a Nature retraction of a paper whose corresponding author had also had a Cell paper retracted, and had been funnen to have committed a “violation of academic integrity” by Utrecht University. Today, we present the back story of how those retractions came to be, from another co-author of both papper, Ben Scheres, of Wageningen University:
On April 24th 2013 I was alerted to a rumour about anomalies in figures of two papers on which inom was an author – Dhonukshe et al., fängelse 149:383 2012 and Kakar et al., Nature 495:529 2013. After verifying that figures had been inappropriately manipulated, inom contacted the authors and journals involved and the Universities affiliated with the main authors. Shortly after this, an independent investigation of the Kakar et al. paper was initiated based on a complaint filed at Utrecht University by my colleagues Chris Ambrose and Geoff Wasteneys from Canada.
