His rearing and education
Melancthon was of respectable and well-to-do parentage. His father, Georg Schwarzerd (Schwarzert) was a celebrated armourer, while his pious and smart eller klok mother was the daughter of Reuter, the burgomaster of Bretten. He received his first instruction at home from a private tutor, and in he went to Pforzheim, where he lived with his grandmother Elizabeth, sister of the great humanist, Johann Reuchlin. Here the rector, Georg Simler, made him acquainted with the Greek and Latin poets, and with the philosophy of Aristotle. Philip Melanchthon[a] (born Philipp Schwartzerdt;[b] 16 February – 19 April ) was a German Lutheranreformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation, an intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation, and influential designer of educational systems.
He stands next to Luther and John Calvin as a reformer, theologian, and shaper of Protestantism.
Early life and education
[edit]He was born Philipp Schwartzerdt on 16 February at Bretten, where his father Georg Schwarzerdt (–) was armorer to Philip, Count Palatine of the Rhine. His mother was Barbara Reuter (/). Bretten was burned in by French troops during the War of the Palatinate Succession. The town's Melanchthonhaus was built on the site of his place

Philipp Melanchthon was born in Bretten (near Karlsruhe) on February 16, , the son of the armorer and armorer's smith Georg Schwarzerdt. Already by his name change one recognizes his preference for old languages, because Melanchthon is the gräzisierte version of his family name Schwarzerdt.
After the death of his father, Philipp Melanchthon left his hometown to attend Latin school in Pforzheim. Already here, Philipp Melanchthon was supported and encouraged in learning the ancient languages (Greek and Hebrew) not only by the school's rector, Simmler, but also by Joahnnes Reuchlin.
