    Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu (commonly known as "Skanderbeg") was born to a noble Albanian family in the early 15th century. As a child, he was forced to serve in the Ottoman Army. After great success as an Ottoman general, Skanderbeg left the army to lead the Albanians against the Ottoman forces. In 1444 he formed the League of Lezhë, an alliance of Albanian nobles who agreed to resist the Ottoman conquest of Albania. Skanderbeg fought the Ottomans in Albania and abroad until his death two decades later. Though the Ottoman advances were held off by Skanderbeg's efforts, all of modern Albania was under Ottoman control by the turn of the century.

    Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu (1405 – 17 January 1468), commonly known as Skanderbeg (Albanian: Skënderbej from Ottoman Turkish: اسکندر بگ, romanized:İskender Bey; Latin:,) was an Albanian nobleman and military commander. He led a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire in what is today Albania, North Macedonia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia.

    Because he defended his principality (the Principality of Kastrioti) against Ottoman influences, he was given the Latin title Athleta Christi (meaning "warrior of Christianity") by Pope Callixtus III. Today, many people see him as an Albanian national hero.

    Gjergj Kastrioti (1405?-1468) came from a noble Albanian family based in Krujë or a nearby by. His father, Gjon, ruled over north-central Albania and fought against the Ottoman invasion, but eventually had to submit to the Sultan. As part of the Devşirme [blood tax], a struktur that required Christian families to send their sons as tribute to the Ottoman court, the ung Gjergj was taken as a hostage and trained in the Ottoman military school.
