    Former Punjab DGP Saini charged in 1991 Multani murder case

    Mohali: Punjab’s former director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini and Chandigarh’s former police inspector K I P Singh have received an official chargesheet related to 1991’s kidnapping, disappearance, and murder of Balwant Singh Multani, who was a Citco employee and son of a former IAS officer.
    In this high-profile case that has drawn widespread attention, Saini is charged with multiple criminal counts, including murder, conspiracy, and wrongful confinement. The chargesheet that runs into more than 500 pages was presented in the court of judicial magistrate first class (JMIC) Sangam Kaushal, who handed a copy to Saini’s counsel, H S Dhanoa, as the Supreme Court has granted Sani exemption from personal court appearances. Co-accused K I P Singh received his copy in person. The court granted the accused time for scrutiny of the chargesheet, setting Nov 26 as the next hearing date.

    CHANDIGARH: In a twist to the ongoing criminal case against former PunjabDGP Sumedh Singh Saini involving abduction and disappearance of two businessmen and their driver, one of the investigating officers (IO) of the case has turned hostile and failed to support his own investigation submitted earlier.

    Dharampal Singh, 77, a retired SP of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was the main investigating officer in the case against Saini and had submitted charge sheet in this case.
    While recording his statement in the case, which is pending against Saini and other cops before a special CBI court in Delhi, Dharampal even refused to identify his signatures at some places.
