  • There are many myths and stories about the dissemination of the Ilizarov method to the West.  Having been involved in the transfer of this technology to the United States and many other countries in the world I decided to write this history down and separate the myth from the actual historical events.  In order to be as historically accurate, I have personally interviewed most of the key figures that were involved in these events.

    While it is not possible to consider every person who had a role in this technology transfer I have focused this review on the pivotal events and people.  If there is any inaccuracy or distortion of history it has occurred despite my best efforts. I have tried to paint these events around the backdrop of world history.

    Background

    Most advances in medicine are disseminated by presentation at medical meetings, by publication, through observers and through commercialization of related products.  The Ilizarov method ultimately followed this same pattern.
