Ann Marie Lipinski has been appointed the Chicago Tribune’s managing editor for news, Tribune Editor Howard Tyner announced Friday. Lipinski will be the first woman to hold that title in the Tribune’s year history.

The appointment of Lipinski, currently the Tribune’s deputy managing editor, is effective Feb. 1. She will replace F. Richard Ciccone, who has been appointed associate editor.

Lipinski, 39, directed the Tribune’s “Killing Our Children” coverage, which detailed the homicides of every child beneath 15 in the six-county area. The series won many awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards’ Grand Prize.

Lipinski was one of three Tribune reporters who won a Pulitzer Prize in for a series titled “City Council: The Spoils of Power.”

Ann Marie Lipinski (born January ) is a journalist and the curator of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard.^[1] She is the former editor of the Chicago Tribune and Vice President for Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago.

Early life and education

Lipinski was raised in Trenton, Michigan, and edited Trenton High School's school paper during her senior year. She graduated from Trenton High in and was voted "most ambitious".^[2]

Lipinski attended University of Michigan and worked on the school's newspaper, The Michigan Daily.^[2] In the summer of , between her junior and senior years, Lipinski interned at The Miami Herald, and co-edited The Michigan Daily in her senior year.^[2] Lipinski left the University of Michigan several credits short of her degree but was awarded a bachelor's degree in after the university deemed her internships worthy of the needed cre
