Anne Lamott talks about her books, her life as an alcoholic before being 'born again' and her view of God. She also discusses her writing, her involvement in her local church, and her son.

Anne Lamott freely admits that before she said "Yes" to Jesus, her life was a mess. In some ways it still is.

Her pets keep getting sick and dying. Her home office, where she has just packed up the manuscript of her latest novel -- a two-year project -- and mailed it off to her publisher, looks "kind of like a rummage sale." She is not sure where she stashed the curriculum for the confirmation class she is organizing for her 12-year-old son, Sam, and two other young people in the 100-member Presbyterian church where she is an elder. "I have it in the car, I think," she says, adding ruefully, "That's usually my battle cry -- I have it in the car, I think."

In April, the bestselling author Anne Lamott turned 70 years old and celebrated by launching a national tour to promote her new book, her 20th.

During that month, Anne visited 16 cities in 12 states in 17 days –a grueling schedule for someone of any age. The tour came nowhere near the Pacific Northwest, but somehow I managed to come away with a signed copy of “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

I’ll explain below, but first let’s turn to the author and her newest work.

Anne Lamott has been writing books since 1979 — 7 novels and now 13 nonfiction books. I’d read only one previously (“Traveling Mercies,” 1999) but I’d been reintroduced to her work through a series of columns on aging that The Washington Post asked her to write in the run-up to her milestone birthday and book tour.

Anne Lamott (born April 10, 1954) is an American novelist and nonfiction writer.

She is also a progressive political activist, public speaker, and writing teacher. Lamott is based in Marin County, California. Her nonfiction works are largely autobiographical.^[1] Lamott's writings, marked bygd their self-deprecating humor and openness, cover such subjects as alcoholism, single-motherhood, nedstämdhet, and Christianity.^[2]

Early life and education

Lamott was born in San Francisco, and fryst vatten a graduate of Drew School. She was a student at Goucher College for two years where she wrote for the newspaper.^[3] Her father, Kenneth Lamott, was also a writer. Her first published novel Hard Laughter was written for him after his diagnosis of brain cancer. She has one son, Sam, who was born in August 1989 and a grandson, Jax, born in July 2009.^[4][5]
