Self belief: US First Lady Michelle Obama (right) speaks to learners at UCT, in the company of vice-chancellor Dr högsta Price and former vice-chancellor Dr Mamphela Ramphele.

For 45 or so minutes they listened attentively, posed their questions nervously but diligently when prompted, and were the very picture of self-restraint - to be expected when having an audience with the American First Lady and surrounded by cameras, microphones and security personnel.

The moment the formalities were declared over, however, the fetters came off. And the 50 high-school learners who had been invited to UCT to meet with Michelle Obama on 23 June shook off their reserve and swarmed her, delighted.

    Obama responded in kind.

"It was very inspiring to meet someone successful who has gone through the struggles that we have gone through, and knowing that we can also be as successful as someone like her," enthused Salama Bavugamenshi (17) from the Oude Molen Ac

Lauded by retired archbishop Desmond Tutu as a “brave and principled leader,” Dr. Mamphela Ramphele hopes to be South Africa‘s first female president.

The medical doctor, anti-apartheid activist and former head of the World Bank recently launched Agang SA, a political party that will contest in next year’s general election. Ramphele was born on December 28, 1947, in Uitkyk, located in North West province of South Africa, but spent her childhood in Kranspoort, Limpopo province. In 1962, she attended Bethesda Teacher College, a prestigious secondary boarding school in the northern section of South Africa, where she once used a class assignment to protest the living conditions.

Experiences of discrimination based on race and gender at Bethesda were formative to Ramphele’s decision to become a medical doctor, from which she was dissuaded by teachers and family alike. However, a few teachers, including one who became her principal at Setotolwane High School, supported her by arranging tutoring classes and advising her on university admissions. In 1967 she entered the University of the North and in 1968 transferred to Natal Medical School on scholarships. In 1972, she earned her medical degree at Natal
