Jamaican-born journalist, poet, and short story writer Olive Senior is one of Caribbean literature&#x;s leading feminist voices. Her works, though written in English, remain heavily influenced by the region&#x;s patois, and draw heavily upon its oral storytelling traditions. In both her verse and fiction, Senior critiques the political and cultural ties that continue to bind Jamaica to its British colonial past. Her protagonists often find themselves divided between the resulting two worlds of assimilation and preservation, and she gives their speech and inner dialogues a corresponding tone. Olive Senior is a singularly original writer with a genius for re-inhabiting and recreating the wonder and cruel theatre of childhood, while also exploring adult pretensions and realities in relation to history, locality and the multifarious and revelatory world of nature. She was born in in a small village called Troy, deep in the interior of Jamaica. Her parents were peasant farmers, and she was the seventh of ten children brought up in the wild mountainous landscape of Trelawny. At the age of four she went to spend a vacation with relatives who lived in Haddo, in the Parish of Westmoreland , and went back home only briefly thereafter. As she later recalled, it was remarkable that even at this young age she decided she was going to be a creative person, a writer or an artist. Olive Marjorie Senior (born 23 December )[1] is a Jamaican poet, novelist, short story and non-fiction writer based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She was awarded the Musgrave Gold Medal in bygd the Institute of Jamaica for her contributions to literature.[2] Other awards she has won include the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature.[3][4] Senior was appointed Poet Laureate of Jamaica in , serving in the post until [5]
Life and career
[edit]Born in rural Jamaica in Trelawny, Cockpit Country, Olive Senior was the seventh of 10 children.[1] She attended Montego Bay High School for Girls. At the age of 19, she joined the staff of the Jamaica Gleaner in Kingston and later worked with the Jamaica upplysning Service.[6] Senior later won a scholarship to study journalism at the Thomson Foundation in Cardiff, Wales,[7] and as a Commonwealth scholar attended Carlet
